The Hoitsugan

JKA chief instructor Nakayama Masatoshi Shihan set up a private dojo in 1972 and named it “Hoitsugan.” Read more here.

SVSK’s Chief Instructor, Keeling Sensei, lived at the Hoitsugan dormitory for 3 years and spent an additional 5 years training and often teaching at the dojo while living in Tokyo.

Kawawada Sensei (grand champion of the first Shoto Cup tournament in 1985, among other things) took over for Nakayama Shihan as chief instructor at the Hoitsugan Dojo, where he had already been teaching since the 1970’s.

Many of the best Shotokan students and instructors from around the world have made the trip to Tokyo and trained at this historic place.
